The University of Rochester Medical Center launched a LEAN project initiated by the FDA ban on powdered gloves to address concerns about case breakdown numbers and staff exposure to latex. Following a surgical glove trial and extensive staff education on latex allergy, the OR consolidated to Biogel® gloves. Surgical glove SKUs decreased from 13 to 3, room tear downs caused by unrecognized latex allergy patients decreased to zero with related cost savings estimated at over $43,000 per year. In addition, 111 cubic feet of storage space was regained in the center core.
